Hyacinths and Biscuits

I was sure there would be lots of poetic quotes about hyacinths. And there were. Most of them about ill fated love in Greek mythology or the one sided romance of the Hyacinth Girl in T S Eliot’s The Wasteland. That sidetracked me for a bit but not what I had in mind.

The words of the American poet Carl Sandburg seemed more fitting "Poetry is the synthesis of hyacinths and biscuits." especially if you substitute art for poetry and especially fitting as I’m enjoying biscuits whilst writing this. (The most delicious Brunsli recipe for chocolate almondy, orangy spicy biscuits from Ottolenghi Simple).

Anyway, on to hyacinths. They really are one of my favourite spring flowers. Arriving so early in the year with the most wonderful colours and perfume. I’ve really enjoyed having them in the studio for the last few days. I’ve filled a sketchbook with them and you can see it here. I also completed 4 small paintings or more appropriately they are spring talismans or icons.

All are 14 inches tall by 11 inches, mixed media paintings using metal leaf, acrylic and ink on a cradled gesso board. Each one is £220 which includes UK p&p. Click on the one you like for more details.

UPDATE I’ve set up a shop on my website just for small paintings. Please checkout what is available https://sallystafford.com/store🌷🌹🌸🌺🌼🌻

I hope you enjoyed seeing them, viewing with biscuits is recommended. These small paintings are going to be part of an exciting exhibition in April, unless they find new homes before then.

Please join my monthly mailing list by clicking the button below if you would like to be the first hear about new work, studio sales and exhibitions.
